PS 889 Dance Explorers After-School Program
Every Child is a Dancer
Program runs September 10 through June 18
School Dismissal to 5:15pm With less and less funding allocated to the arts in schools, after-school enrichment is becoming more and more important for child development. Dance programs like ours offer opportunities for physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development where other activities only provide outlets for a few of those.
Our Dance Explorers After-School Program fosters creativity, joy, confidence, connection, and community. Through dance, we explore who we are, why we dance, and the people and cultures who have developed the spectrum of dance styles enjoyed throughout the world. Technical warm-ups build strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, poise, and body awareness. Creative projects and film study help us to experience styles and cultures that may be new to us. For each genre of dance we study, we learn about what it is, where it came from, and what makes it special. |
Thoughout the year, we'll experiment with these various dance styles unit by unit, through choreography that dancers will have the opportunity to perform in Dance Parade NYC (older dancers only, based on the distance required) and for local fairs. No experience needed! An extension of our camp programming, Dance Explorers will provide a wonderful introduction to dance for new dancers and complement technique classes at the studio as well.
Your children enjoy the same attention, care, training, and small class sizes that they do at our Church Ave dance studio. We are happy to have need-based scholarship opportunities available and discuss sliding scale options as well. We are currently looking into education-based fiscal sponsorship and nonprofit status, but we do not yet have any funding behind it.
